Rigo's Daughter

2008
Ballpoint pen on mat board
9x12 inches

This is a portrait drawing of the daughter of one of my managers from work.

Drawing children is maybe the most terrifying mode of portraiture to me, because
a)you're dealing with a physical appearance which is not as defined as an adult's
b)you're dealing with parents who, being parents, have an acute knowledge of their children's appearance and as such can be very hard to please (though this is not the case with this drawing)

This was pretty successful if I may say so myself. The work on the face was a definite exercise in letting suggestion do more of the work than actual definition via marks.

I'm doing nothing today. I might do some drawing, but at this time all I've accomplished is drinking some coffee and uploading pics.

Here are some others for the RPG I was doing concept sketches for. The only direction I received, besides some vague character descrptions, was to go for a "70's Robotech" feel. I think some of them need bigger hair.

These guys are called "runners". Kinda like super-messenger boys.

I realized that I haven't been drawing very many females, so this cute girl I remembered from Starbucks got the treatment.

Yeah, Spidey's head is a little messed up. I was going for a totally different angle when I started it, but then i like how the rest of the body turned out, so i kept it that was with the 25 cent ink job I did on it. *shrugs* looks kinda goofy, like he has a broken neck, but in some ways I kind of like it.

Query [23 May 2005|10:51am]

Okay, all you artsy fartsy people out there...

I've a proposal made to me to travel to Florida to do a large project. A non-profit organization wants to contract me to paint a 10' x 30' banner, something weather proof, that will last for a few years.

I've advised them that their best option to go through a large format, offset printer, so that a banner could be printed on vinyl and would last, but financially, that's not an option for them.

So, two questions:

1. What would be the best medium in which to do a project of this size, with these requirements?

2. I've figured that airbrushing may be the best option in which to paint, but depending on what kind of "canvas" I'm using, what would be the best type of paint to use?

I've suggested to them military grade canvas, they kind you would see tents made out of, so that's an avenue we're exporing. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Some images from my ashcan I gave away at the Kansas City comic con last weekend. It was a one shot about a girl who falls out of an airplane and this dude saves her.

I had some other sketches from that time... but i have this feeling they got swooped up into someone else's sketchbook.

Anyway, click here for some rough panels...Collapse )

I had to draw something this weekend. So, looking back on stuff people had given me, I grabbed up some of the things from gdg had given me from his comic he does, "Wraith".

The second Paulus is way off, as far as his legs go. He kind of looks like a muscular dwarf, i think.

Three of the following are his characters, copywrite, etc...

Already got some good feedback regarding the lips from gothfox, but i thought i'd throw it around a bit.

I cut her hair a bit. Still don't like the lips.

One other re-do for the hair. Going for that "no way to exist in real life look".

comic page test [13 Dec 2004|12:08pm]

So I laid this page out, right? I have a big space in the middle I need to put something visually interesting, something urban. Scanner doesn't take a whole comic page, so I had to split it up. Bottom first, then top.
